I made these back before I knew how tumblr worked and I had yet to post them as a set. So I keep finding people sharing them (which is great) but they always point back to my cghub page and they also don’t have the Mr. Freeze image with them.
Love how Gordon looks like a member of the Shinsengumi.
It’s probably not the Shinsengumi, but rather going back to the design that the Shinsengumi took it from - the Chuushingura story (the 47 ronin).
(Besides, the Shinsengumi were from the late Edo period, a few hundred years after the Sengoku period.)
It’s a little bit of both actually. Full disclosure is that the Edo period is probably a better description of the setting I’m actually using but I think “Sengoku Batman” just sounds a lot better than “Edo Batman”. The Sengoku period also receives a lot of attention and reinterpretation in media and has a lot of material for dramatization and parody. It just functions as a much more inclusive wrapper for the series.
But my main artistic reference has been Utagawa Kuniyoshi, an ukiyo-e artist who was working in the Edo period. I was indeed referencing the Shinsengumi with Gordon’s clothing but I had changed the colors to be reminiscent of his look in Batman the Animated Series (Bruce Timm). Of course because I changed the color that does lead to a bit of confusion as to whether I was referencing that or the Chuushingura.
